Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg, also known by his online name PewDiePie, often shortened to PewDie or Pewds, is a video game commentator, comedian, vlogger, and entertainer and is the most subscribed person on YouTube until 2019. From December 2014 to Valentine's Day of 2017, his channel was the most viewed on YouTube.
He is known for playing many horror and indie games, often boosting sales of said games, as well as making vlogs often featuring a computer. PewDiePie refers to his fanbase as the "Bro Army" and individual fans as "bros". Felix often raises awareness for various charities, too. He currently lives in England with his girlfriend, Italian YouTuber CutiePieMarzia (Marzia Bisognin) and his two pugs, Edgar and Maya.
Career
To the chagrin of his parents, Felix left college to focus on YouTube. To support himself, he worked a hot dog stand as a side job and made art. Felix's original account was named "PewDie", but forgot the channel's password, so he created a new one and adding "Pie" on the end. Within two years of starting his new YouTube channel, Felix gained one million subscribers. In December of 2012, Felix signed under Maker Studios.
By July 2013, exactly a year later, Felix became the second-most subscribed channel on YouTube, with over 10 million subscribers, passing Jenna Marbles and passed Smosh the next month. By the end of 2013, Felix's channel went from 3.5 million to over 19 million subscribers. According to MatPat, Felix's quick growth in online popularity and success was his internationality, long watch time, and consistent upload schedule, making it easier for YouTube to recognize and promote him. That year, Maker Studios created a PewDiePie app. Felix also temporarily disabled comments at one point, as most were spam and self-advertisements.
In 2015, Felix announced a new show called Scare PewDiePie, a new show on YouTube Red in which he would go through experiences based on various horror games he played, somewhat similar to MatPat's Game Lab. A second season was confirmed in June 2016, but due to controversies, in February 2017, Maker Studios dropped him and the show's second season, which was already in production at the time.
Felix currently has over 62 million subscribers and 17 billion views and is currently the only YouTuber to receive the ruby play button, an award for people and companies exceeding 50 million subscribers on YouTube.
